Visit of Grado and the natural reserve of Isonzo river

Grado, the "Golden Island", stands in a picturesque lagoon amidst a maize of small islands. It is worth to visit mostly during food and wine events. In the wonderful setting of "Campo dei Patriarchi" in the "old city" you can admire the early Christian buildings such as the Basilica dedicated to Santa Eufemia, from which top stands the statue of the Angel San Michele (called "Anzolo" and symbol of the city), the Baptistery and the Lapidarium. Moreover, there, you can visit the Basilica dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, the oldest of Grado.
Discover then, the natural beauty spot with two nature reserves, where freshwater marshes, but also vast salty wetlands, reed beds, woodlands and grasslands. This is the mouth of the Isonzo Reserve is the ideal habitat for many animal species and, in particular, for resident and migratory birds. Not surprisingly, it has been acknowledged as the best area in Italy for birdwatching. Its heart, the island of Cona which houses the visitor centre, is one of the major educational, scientific and naturalistic sites renowned internationally.
The integrity of the area is ensured by constant environmental interventions and is also entrusted to the animals themselves such as to the Camargue horses living free in the reserve which help control the development of the prairies.
