Breakfast Time at leisure Optional activity 1 - Route of the fortified compound of Mt. Ragogna Following the defeat of Caporetto, the Austro-German army pushed through the Friulian plain, forcing the weakened Italian forces to retreat towards Veneto. Leaving behind the town of Udine in late October, a number of soldiers who did not receive any order from the Supreme Command built some barricades to oppose resistance near the Tagliamento, especially on the bridges of Cornino and Pinzano. Here, under European project "The places of the Great War on the Friulian hills", an open-air museum located in Ragogna opened in 2007. It includes four routes to discover the history of this land, from pre-war fortifications to remains of military installations, fortified posts and memorabilia of the so-called Battle of the Tagliamento. Optional activity 2 - Route of the Austro-Hungarian entrenched camp of Ragogna The Austro-Hungarian entrenched camp of Ragogna is the second route offered by the open-air Museum "The places of the Great War on the Friulian hills". Com-pared to the fortified compound of Mt. Ragogna, this is a shorter excursion lead-ing to a number of Austro-Hungarian defensive structures built during the year of Austrian military occupation of Friuli (November 1917 - November 1918) to block possible Italian counter-attacks. Besides important historical remnants, this itinerary offers visitors the opportunity to discover the typical landscape around the Tagliamento River, characterized by dense vegetation and gravel from the river banks. Before the dirt trail, on the road from San Giacomo to Aenodis, at the intersection between Via San Remigio and Via del Lavoro, you can see the first remain of the Great War. It is a machine-gun pit with a plaque (partly) created by construction workers, which can only be seen from outside as it now lies on private land.
